As a company, DSD has authored, co-authored and contributed to numerous articles in clinical journals while our services, training and workflows are all evidence based.
In this post, Luken de Arbeloa, DSD Education Strategy Maestro specialized in prosthetics, implant prostheses and esthetic dentistry, takes a look at a clinical paper to highlight what he believes are the most important takeaways.
The article ‘Dental software classification and dento-facial interdisciplinary planning platform’ was co-authored by Christian Coachman and published in The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. The authors set out a dental software classification which is based on the timeline of the digital workflow.

What is the most important thing a dentist should understand about this article?
Luken de Arbeloa: “The use of software in modern dentistry has become routine. To get the most out of it according to what point of the treatment we are at, we must use dental software based on its benefit and understand its classification.
Dental treatment is basically divided into two major moments:
1. The pre-case acceptance moment, when the main focus will be data collection, facially guided design, simulations of interdisciplinary treatments, decision making for the treatment plan, and patient education.
2. The post-case acceptance moment, when the main focus will be the disciplinary planning and the manufacturing of devices and final products to comply with the proposal in the pre-acceptance of the case and the quality control of the results.
That’s why we must know the different options on the market and the strength of each one according to this classification to take full advantage of it.”
Does this article link to any other papers that DSD has co-authored or other researchers have published?
Luken de Arbeloa:“Yes, it links to the following papers:
Coachman C, Calamita M, Sesma N. From 2D to 3D: complete digital workflow in interdisciplinary dentistry. J Cosmet Dent. 2016;32: 62-74.
Coachman C, Calamita M. Digital smile design: a tool for treatment planning and communication in esthetic dentistry. Quintessence Dent Technol. 2012;35:103-111.

How does this knowledge influence how we teach at courses or our services at the DSD Planning Center?
Luken de Arbeloa:“The classification proposed in the article is the product of over ten years of creating plans and training dentists around the world in efficient digital workflows in dentistry. This classification is the backbone of our daily planning workflow.
At the DSD Planning Center, we use multiple softwares in the workflow. The ones for main daily use are those focused on case pre-acceptance since these will be the basis that will guide the rest of the workflow.”
In the ‘Clinical Articles’ series, we talk about clinical papers co-authored by Christian Coachman and other notable clinicians to highlight the most relevant topics for dental professionals today.
