The DSD STL files received for the DSD Interdisciplinary product.
If you’re set up to work with the DSD Planning Center but aren’t clear on which products you should order for different clinical situations, this article is for you.
Today we will look at a product available from the DSD Planning Center for your complex cases, and also those that might require multiple treatment options. Read on to learn about the DSD Interdisciplinary and when it might be the right choice for your patient.
What is the DSD Interdisciplinary?
The DSD Interdisciplinary is a facially driven digital wax-up created after a comprehensive, facially driven, clinical and functional analysis of your patient. It includes both the upper and lower arches and all the 3D treatment simulations you need to understand the case requirements, to treatment plan together with your specialists and to communicate and sell the case to your patient.
Who is this product a good fit for?
If you’re working on a complex case this could be the right product for you.
When you order the DSD Interdisciplinary you will receive support with diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment sequencing, which can be helpful when you have to carry out a combination of treatments. This will help you work out where to start and which procedures to carry out first. It also helps to make communication with the specialists who will work together with you on the case much easier.
For example, if you’re working on an ortho patient who will also need implants or grafts, you can take advantage of this product for us to set up a treatment plan with you and work on the phases. This will help you to clearly explain the full treatment process to your patient, help them to understand better and ultimately positively impact your case acceptance.
For simpler cases in which you need to treat the upper and lower arches, the DSD Upper and Lower might be enough for you.
What does the DSD Interdisciplinary include?
The DSD Interdisciplinary includes the digital wax-up of the patient’s upper and lower arches as well as 3D simulations of every procedure required. This could be ortho simulations, perio, implants, any type of graft the patient may need, or even orthognathic surgery.
In addition, ordering this comprehensive product includes support from the DSD Planning Center team with diagnosis as well as treatment planning.
There will be a 45-minute live treatment planning session in which you can talk to one of our most experienced clinicians us about the design itself, treatment planning and sequencing, and also adjust anything you may want to modify. We encourage you to include your specialists in this call so that we can discuss all procedures together and you will be on the same page for the following appointments.
The DSD Interdisciplinary is the only DSD main product that may include more than one treatment option. We believe this is important as it allows you to show the limitations and benefits of more than one treatment option and improve your case acceptance.
When should I order the DSD Interdisciplinary?
The DSD Interdisciplinary is a pre-case acceptance product, which means that you will need to order it in between your patient’s first and second appointments.
When you order it, you will need to send us all the patient records that you have taken in the first appointment and then you will receive a link to schedule the live treatment planning (LTP) call. During the LTP call, you will discuss the design and the treatment plan behind it with one of the DSD Mentors (our top clinicians). Then we will send you all the STL files and the DSD Interdisciplinary presentation.
In this way, in your second appointment with your patient you will have everything you need to present the treatment plan and the DSD smile design to your patient.

What do you need to send us to order your DSD Interdisciplinary?
First of all, we need the photos and videos of your patient taken following the DSD photo protocol. This is very important because this is a facially driven treatment plan and we require good quality photos and videos to be able to design the case.
STL files of the upper and lower arches with current occlusal relation. You can also send us the deprogrammed bite if you believe this would be helpful.
A CBCT is mandatory for the DSD Interdisciplinary. As we’re planning implants and doing ortho we want to see that we have all the roots inside the bone (or at least diagnose the need for adjunct ortho therapies such as SFOT), and we’re also simulating grafts and orthognathic surgery.
Any other files you have, such as panoramic and/or periapical X-rays and other clinical information you consider important for us to plan according to your prescriptions and patient limitations.
What do you receive when you order the DSD Interdisciplinary?
After the live treatment planning session with us, you will receive six digital files:
The first of these is the DSD Interdisciplinary presentation. This contains the diagnostic findings, the designs for the upper and lower arches, the simulations of every procedure that you need to explain to your patient, and a 2D simulation of the final outcome done with the DSD App. The presentation is an excellent tool when it comes to communicating with your patient.
Then there are five STL files:
Two STL files for the upper. The first is the pre-treatment upper, in which we take the initial patient situation and overlap it with the DSD design so you can understand what we are suggesting for the patient. The second is the post-treatment upper, in which we digitally trim the initial model so you can see a simulation of the final outcome of the upper arch.
Two STL files for the lower. The first is the pre-treatment lower, in which we take the initial patient situation and overlap it with the DSD design so you can understand what we are suggesting for the patient. The second is the post-treatment lower, in which we digitally trim the initial model so you can see a simulation of the final outcome of the upper arch.
One motivational STL file. You can then print this upper mock up model and build the silicone key (or ask us to manufacture it for you in the DSD Lab). This allows you to place the Motivational Mock up for the patient’s Smile Test Drive and help them to get a clearer idea of how the final outcome should look.
